Possible Causes

Overheating AquaFlo motor windings, Blocked motor ventilation, Incorrect supply voltage, Seized or partially seized pump bearings

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn off power at the breaker and allow the motor to cool for at least 30 minutes before inspection.

  • Verify correct voltage: Confirm that the AquaFlo pump is wired for the correct voltage (115V or 230V) as indicated on the motor nameplate. Use a multimeter at the line terminal block to ensure supply matches the rating.
  • Check for blocked ventilation: Inspect the motor housing and cooling fan area for leaves, debris, or nests blocking airflow. Clean all vents and ensure at least several inches of clearance around the motor.
  • Inspect pump for binding: With power OFF, remove the rear motor cover and rotate the shaft by hand. It should spin smoothly. If stiff or grinding, the motor bearings or pump seal may be failing and causing overload.
  • Check for over-amping: Use a clamp meter to measure motor current draw while running (if it will run briefly). Compare to the nameplate full-load amps. Excessive current indicates mechanical drag or internal winding issues.
  • Reduce run load temporarily: Close return valves slightly to reduce flow and see if the motor stays running longer. If it does, the system may be overloading the pump (e.g., undersized plumbing or high head pressure).

Persistent thermal trips usually indicate failing bearings or internal motor damage; plan for motor replacement or professional service.
