Pump is very noisy with a grinding or screeching sound while running

Safety first: Disconnect power and allow the motor to stop completely before touching it.

• Isolate the noise source: Use a mechanic's stethoscope or a long screwdriver to listen at the motor body versus the pump housing. Loud grinding at the motor indicates bearing failure.
• Check for shaft play: With power off, try to move the motor shaft up/down and side-to-side. Any noticeable play suggests worn bearings.
• Inspect for water damage: Look for rust streaks or water marks on the motor casing and around the shaft seal area. A failed mechanical seal may have allowed water into the bearings.
• Plan bearing or motor replacement: Bearings on Calpeda motors can often be replaced by a motor repair shop. For severe damage or older units, replacing the complete motor may be more economical.
• Do not continue running: Operating with noisy bearings can lead to rotor seizure and further damage to the pump and electrical system.
