Pump motor is very hot to the touch but still running

Safety first: Do not touch the motor casing with bare hands if it is extremely hot. Turn off power and allow it to cool.

• Check ventilation: Inspect the motor cooling fan and air slots. Remove leaves, dust, and debris with a soft brush and compressed air.
• Improve environment: Ensure the pump is not enclosed in a small, unventilated box. Provide adequate airflow and shade from direct sunlight.
• Measure current draw: Use a clamp meter to measure motor current on each phase or line. Compare to the nameplate full-load current. If significantly higher, investigate system head (valves, filter, pipe size) and impeller size.
• Verify supply voltage and frequency: Confirm that the supply matches the motor nameplate (e.g., 230 V 50 Hz). Incorrect frequency or overvoltage can cause overheating.
• Consider derating: In very hot climates, it may be necessary to reduce run time or speed (on variable-speed models) to prevent overheating.
