Possible Causes
Open or weak start capacitor, faulty centrifugal switch (if fitted), seized motor bearings, jammed impeller
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Isolate power and discharge capacitors before handling.
- Check impeller and shaft: Ensure the pump wet end is free and the shaft rotates easily by hand.
- Inspect capacitor: Locate the Certikin motor capacitor housing, remove the cover, and visually inspect the capacitor. Replace if bulging, leaking, or if capacitance is out of spec.
- Centrifugal switch: On older motors with a mechanical switch, check for burnt or stuck contacts and clean or replace as needed.
After replacing the capacitor and confirming free rotation, test the pump. If it still only hums, the motor windings may be damaged.
