Digital Davey pool pump controller will not start the pump and displays E1 on the screen.

Safety first: Turn off power at the circuit breaker before opening any part of the pump or filter. Never run the pump dry.

Step-by-step checks:

• 1. Check pool water level: Ensure the water level is at least halfway up the skimmer opening so the skimmer does not draw air.
• 2. Clean skimmer basket: Remove the skimmer basket, empty leaves and debris, and reinstall it properly.
• 3. Clean pump strainer basket: Turn off power, close suction and return valves if fitted, open the pump lid on the Davey wet end, remove the strainer basket, clean it thoroughly, check for cracks, then reinstall and ensure the lid O-ring is clean and lubricated with silicone grease.
• 4. Check filter pressure and condition: If you have a Davey cartridge filter, remove the cartridge and hose it off from top to bottom. If you have a Davey media/sand filter, perform a full backwash and rinse cycle according to the valve label.
• 5. Inspect suction valves and lines: Confirm all suction valves (skimmer, main drain, vacuum line) are open. Look for obvious kinks or collapses in flexible suction hose if used.
• 6. Prime the pump: Fill the pump strainer housing with water, reinstall the lid, open valves, then restore power and start the pump. Watch for steady water flow in the pump lid.
• 7. Clear the error: Use the controller's STOP/START or RESET button (refer to your specific Davey controller manual) to clear E1 once normal flow is restored.

If E1 returns immediately after restoring flow, the flow sensor or controller may be faulty and should be checked by a qualified technician.
