Possible Causes

Seized or partially seized pump impeller, Blocked pump volute or diffuser, Motor bearings binding, Incorrect supply voltage or undersized wiring causing high current draw

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Isolate power at the main switch or breaker before touching the pump. Confirm with a non-contact voltage tester if available.

Step-by-step checks:

  • 1. Check for obvious mechanical blockage: With power off, remove the pump lid and basket. Reach into the wet end (do not use excessive force) and feel for debris around the impeller eye. Do not insert fingers into the impeller vanes if they are sharp or damaged.
  • 2. Spin the motor shaft: On many Davey pumps you can access the shaft at the rear fan cover. With power off, try to rotate the shaft by hand. It should turn smoothly. If it is stiff, grinds, or will not turn, the bearings or impeller may be seized.
  • 3. Inspect for foreign objects: Remove the pump wet end cover (volute) if you are comfortable doing so. Check for stones, cable ties, or other debris jammed in the impeller or diffuser.
  • 4. Check supply voltage: Using a multimeter (only if you are competent and licensed where required), verify that the voltage at the pump terminals matches the rating on the Davey motor nameplate. Low voltage can cause high current and E2 trips.
  • 5. Reset the controller: After clearing any blockage and ensuring the shaft spins freely, restore power and press RESET/START on the controller. Monitor the pump for normal operation.

If E2 persists with a free-spinning shaft and correct voltage, the motor windings or electronic drive may be damaged. Contact a Davey service agent.
