E3
Davey
Overtemperature / Thermal Protection Trip
Davey variable speed pool pump controller displays E3 and the pump will not start or stops abruptly.

Possible Causes
Blocked motor cooling vents, Pump running in direct sun with poor ventilation, High ambient temperature and restricted airflow in pump enclosure, Motor fan damaged or missing
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power at the breaker before inspecting the motor housing or fan.
Step-by-step checks:
- 1. Inspect installation location: Ensure the pump is not enclosed in a small, unventilated box. There should be adequate airflow around the Davey motor and controller.
- 2. Clean cooling vents: Use a soft brush or compressed air to remove dust, cobwebs, and debris from the motor cooling slots and controller heatsink fins. Do not spray water directly into the motor.
- 3. Check motor fan: Look through the rear fan cover to confirm the plastic cooling fan is intact and firmly attached to the shaft. If broken or missing, the motor will overheat quickly.
- 4. Reduce run time or speed: On variable speed Davey pumps, temporarily reduce the speed setting or duty cycle to lower heat generation, especially during very hot weather.
- 5. Allow cool-down: Leave the pump powered off for at least 30–60 minutes to allow the internal thermal cut-out to reset.
- 6. Reset the error: Restore power and clear E3 using the controller's reset/start function. Monitor the pump for signs of overheating (hot smell, very hot casing).
If E3 recurs quickly under normal conditions, the motor windings or temperature sensor may be failing and require professional diagnosis.
