Possible Causes

Failed start capacitor, Loose capacitor wiring, Seized motor bearings, Defective motor start relay (if equipped)

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Disconnect the Flowclear pump from mains power and wait several minutes. Capacitors can store charge; do not touch capacitor terminals directly.

Diagnostic steps:

  • 1. Listen for symptoms: When attempting to start (briefly, then unplug), note if the motor only hums or clicks without spinning. This often indicates a capacitor or start circuit issue.
  • 2. Access capacitor compartment: Remove the motor end cover where the Flowclear start capacitor is housed (typically a cylindrical component). Inspect for bulging, leaking, or burn marks.
  • 3. Check wiring: Ensure capacitor leads are firmly connected to the terminals and that no insulation is damaged. Do not short the terminals with tools.
  • 4. Spin test: With power disconnected and pump basket removed, try to rotate the impeller by hand. If it is stiff or grinding, the motor bearings may be seized and the entire motor assembly will need replacement.
  • 5. Replace capacitor if faulty: If the capacitor is visibly damaged or tests bad with a capacitance meter, replace it with an identical Flowclear-rated microfarad (µF) and voltage rating part.
  • 6. If unsure: Because of shock risk, if you are not comfortable working around capacitors, contact a qualified technician.
