Possible Causes
Failed start capacitor in Franklin Electric motor, Stuck centrifugal switch (if equipped), Seized motor bearings, Impeller jammed with debris
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power and verify the motor cannot start unexpectedly.
- Check for mechanical binding: Remove the pump lid and basket, then try to rotate the motor shaft from the rear by hand. If it will not turn, disassemble the wet end and clear debris or replace the motor.
- Inspect start capacitor: Access the capacitor compartment and look for bulging or leaking capacitors. Test and replace as needed with Franklin Electric-specified parts.
- Check centrifugal switch: On motors with a mechanical start switch, inspect for stuck or burned contacts and free movement. Replace the motor if the switch is damaged.
- Reassemble and test: After repairs, restore power and start the pump. If it still only hums, the windings may be damaged and the motor should be replaced.
