Possible Causes
Worn front or rear bearings in Franklin Electric motor, Water intrusion into motor, Misalignment between motor and pump wet end, Extended operation under overload
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power and allow the motor to cool before touching it.
- Confirm noise source: Use a mechanic’s stethoscope or a long screwdriver to listen at the motor housing versus the pump volute to confirm the noise is from bearings.
- Check for shaft play: With power off, try moving the motor shaft up/down and in/out. Excessive play indicates worn bearings.
- Inspect for leaks: Look for water trails from the pump seal area into the motor. A failed mechanical seal can wash out bearings.
- Replace bearings or motor: Bearings can be replaced by a motor shop, but for many pool installations it is more practical to replace the Franklin Electric motor assembly.
- Replace shaft seal: If water intrusion is evident, replace the mechanical shaft seal at the same time to prevent repeat failure.
