Possible Causes

Tripped thermal overload in motor, Failed motor start capacitor, Loose or burned motor wiring at terminal block, Defective motor windings

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn off power at the breaker and verify with a non-contact voltage tester before touching any wiring. Lock out the breaker if possible.

  • Check for overload reset: Some Harris variable-speed pool pumps have an internal thermal overload. Allow the pump to cool for 30–45 minutes, then try restarting.
  • Inspect supply voltage: Confirm the breaker is ON and measure voltage at the pump input terminals with a multimeter. Compare to the nameplate rating (e.g., 115V or 230V). Low or missing voltage will prevent start.
  • Check motor wiring connections: Remove the rear motor cover and inspect the wiring at the motor terminal block for loose screws, burned insulation, or discoloration. Tighten any loose terminals and replace any burned connectors.
  • Test the start capacitor: Locate the motor capacitor can on the top or side of the Harris motor. Discharge it safely (short the terminals with an insulated resistor), then remove and test with a capacitance meter. If the reading is more than ±10% off the rated µF, replace the capacitor.
  • Try a manual spin test: With power OFF, remove the rear fan shroud and gently spin the motor shaft with a screwdriver or by hand. If it is seized or very stiff, the motor bearings may be locked and the motor will need replacement.

If the motor still will not start after these checks, the windings or internal overload may be damaged and the complete motor assembly should be replaced.
