Possible Causes
Worn mechanical shaft seal, Improper seal installation, Operation without water causing seal overheating, Chemical damage from improper water balance
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power and close suction and return valves before disassembling the pump.
- Confirm leak location: Observe the pump while running (from a safe distance) to verify water is seeping from the joint between the motor and the Harris pump housing, not from unions or drain plugs.
- Remove motor from wet end: With valves closed and pump drained, unbolt the motor from the pump housing and pull it straight back to expose the seal assembly.
- Replace shaft seal: Remove the old shaft seal components from the impeller and seal plate. Install a new Harris-compatible shaft seal kit, taking care not to touch the polished seal faces with bare fingers.
- Reassemble and test: Reinstall the motor, tighten bolts evenly, reopen valves, prime the pump, and check for leaks.
Always run the pump with adequate water to prevent premature seal failure.
