Possible Causes
Pump drawing excessive current due to seized PowerFlo motor bearings, Impeller obstruction inside PowerFlo wet end, Incorrect voltage or miswiring of PowerFlo motor, Undersized circuit or breaker feeding the pump
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off the breaker feeding the pump and lock it out if possible. Confirm power is off before touching the pump.
- Check for mechanical binding: Remove the pump strainer lid on the PowerFlo, take out the basket, and inspect the impeller area with a flashlight. Remove any debris (stones, toys, leaves) that may be jamming the impeller.
- Spin the motor shaft: On most PowerFlo models, you can access the motor shaft at the rear fan end. With power off, try to rotate the shaft by hand. It should turn smoothly. If it is stiff or frozen, the motor bearings may be seized and the motor assembly will need replacement.
- Verify wiring and voltage: Confirm that the PowerFlo motor is wired for the correct voltage (115V vs 230V) per the nameplate and that the supply matches. Miswiring can cause overcurrent.
- Check circuit sizing: Ensure the breaker and wire gauge match the motor’s full load amps (FLA) on the PowerFlo nameplate. An undersized breaker will nuisance-trip.
- Reset controller: After correcting any issues, clear the OL code on the external controller and test the pump. If OL returns with normal current draw, the controller may be defective.
