Possible Causes
Worn ceramic/carbon shaft seal in PowerFlo wet end, Misaligned motor to housing causing seal wear, Running pump dry overheating the seal, Corrosion on motor shaft at seal contact area
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power and close valves or plug lines to prevent water flow. Disconnect the pump from power before disassembly.
- Confirm leak source: Dry the area and run the pump briefly. If water appears at the joint between the PowerFlo motor and pump housing and drips along the bottom of the motor, the shaft seal is likely failed.
- Remove motor assembly: Disconnect hoses/unions, remove the four through-bolts or clamp band holding the motor to the PowerFlo housing, and pull the motor/impeller assembly straight back.
- Replace shaft seal: Remove the impeller from the motor shaft, then remove both halves of the mechanical seal (ceramic seat in the housing and carbon/spring half on the impeller). Install a new Hayward PowerFlo shaft seal kit, handling the ceramic surfaces carefully and keeping them clean.
- Reassemble: Reinstall the impeller and motor onto the housing, tighten bolts evenly, reconnect plumbing, prime the pump, and test for leaks.
