Hayward PowerFlo
Intermittent Suction Air Leak
Hayward PowerFlo pump loses prime intermittently; it starts with good flow but then the basket slowly empties and the pump sucks air.

Possible Causes
Worn or flattened PowerFlo lid O-ring, Hairline crack in PowerFlo strainer housing, Loose drain plug on PowerFlo pump housing, Suction hose or PVC line with small crack or loose clamp
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off the pump before inspection.
- Inspect lid and housing: Examine the clear PowerFlo lid and the strainer housing for fine cracks, especially around the threads and corners. Replace the housing or lid if any cracks are found.
- Service lid O-ring: Remove, clean, and lubricate the O-ring. If it does not sit snugly in its groove or appears flattened, replace it with a genuine Hayward PowerFlo lid O-ring.
- Check drain plugs: Verify that the drain plug(s) on the bottom of the PowerFlo housing are present and snug, with intact gaskets. Replace missing or damaged gaskets.
- Inspect suction line: For above-ground setups using hoses, check for kinks, cracks, or loose hose clamps. Tighten clamps and replace brittle hoses.
