Hayward PowerFlo
High System Head / Filter Restriction
Hayward PowerFlo pump runs but the pressure gauge on the filter is very high and flow at the returns is reduced.

Possible Causes
Dirty or clogged pool filter, Closed or partially closed return valves, Undersized return plumbing for PowerFlo flow rate, Multiport valve set incorrectly (e.g., recirculate vs filter)
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off the pump before changing valve positions or opening the filter.
- Backwash or clean filter: For sand/DE filters, backwash until water runs clear. For cartridge filters, remove and clean or replace the cartridge.
- Check valves: Ensure all return-side valves are fully open to allow proper flow.
- Verify multiport setting: Confirm the multiport valve is set to FILTER (or the desired mode) and that the handle is fully engaged.
- Monitor pressure: After cleaning, restart the PowerFlo and note the clean filter pressure. Use this as a baseline for future maintenance.
