Possible Causes
Loose internal control cable, Corrupted drive firmware, Moisture intrusion into drive housing, Failed control PCB
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect power at the breaker before opening any covers.
- Power cycle: Turn off the breaker for at least 2 minutes, then restore power to reset the drive electronics.
- Inspect drive housing: Check the control end of the Hayward pump for signs of water intrusion, corrosion, or cracked housing. Any moisture can cause communication errors.
- Check internal connections: If you are qualified, remove the drive/control cover and verify that all ribbon cables and connectors between the keypad, control board, and power board are fully seated.
- Firmware/automation: If the pump is connected to a Hayward automation system, disconnect the communication cable (RS-485) and try running the pump in standalone mode to rule out external control issues.
- Board replacement: If Er1 persists, the control PCB or entire drive module is likely defective and should be replaced as a unit per Hayward service procedures.
