Possible Causes
Clogged pump basket, Dirty or clogged filter, Closed or partially closed suction/return valves, Air leak on suction side
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power at the breaker before opening any part of the pump or plumbing. Never run the pump dry.
- Check water level: Ensure the pool water level is at least halfway up the skimmer opening so the skimmer doesn’t suck air.
- Inspect pump basket: Remove the pump lid on your Hayward pump, pull out the strainer basket, and clean out leaves and debris. Reseat the basket properly.
- Check valves: Verify that all suction and return valves (skimmer, main drain, cleaner line) are fully open.
- Clean the filter: If you have a Hayward cartridge filter, remove and hose off the cartridges. For a Hayward sand or DE filter, backwash according to the manufacturer’s instructions until the sight glass runs clear.
- Inspect for air leaks: With the pump running, look for air bubbles in the pump lid. If present, shut off power, remove the lid, clean and lubricate the lid O-ring with pool-safe silicone lube, and reinstall. Tighten unions and fittings on the suction side.
- Reset the pump: Restore power and restart the pump. If FLO persists, the internal flow sensor or pressure switch may be faulty and should be tested or replaced.
