Possible Causes

Impeller jammed or obstructed, Seized motor bearings, Incorrect programming causing excessive load, Shorted motor windings

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn off power at the breaker and verify the pump cannot start unexpectedly.

  • Check for mechanical blockage: Remove the pump lid and basket. Reach into the wet end (with power off) and try to rotate the impeller shaft using a screwdriver at the rear motor shaft or by hand if accessible. It should turn smoothly.
  • Clear debris: If you feel resistance, disassemble the pump housing per Hayward’s manual and inspect the impeller and diffuser for stones, plastic, or other debris. Remove any obstructions.
  • Inspect bearings: Spin the motor shaft by hand. Grinding, squealing, or stiffness indicates failing bearings, which increase current draw.
  • Review speed settings: On variable-speed models, reduce the maximum RPM and test again. Excessive RPM against a dirty filter or closed valves can cause overcurrent.
  • Electrical test: If the shaft spins freely but OC persists, have the motor windings tested for shorts or insulation breakdown. A shorted stator or failing drive will require replacement.
