Possible Causes
Blocked ventilation around motor, High ambient temperature and poor airflow, Failing motor bearings causing excess heat, Internal drive cooling fan failure
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power at the breaker and allow the pump to cool before touching the motor housing.
- Check ventilation: Ensure the Hayward pump has adequate clearance on all sides. Remove leaves, dirt, and obstructions from around the motor vents.
- Inspect for direct sun exposure: If the pump is in full sun, consider adding a ventilated shade or cover that does not block airflow.
- Check for bearing noise: When the pump is cool, briefly run it and listen for grinding or squealing. Noisy bearings cause overheating and should be replaced.
- Clean cooling fins and fan: With power off, inspect the rear of the motor for a cooling fan and fins. Clean off dust and debris with a soft brush or compressed air.
- Verify load conditions: Ensure valves are open and the filter is clean so the pump is not working against excessive head pressure.
- Persistent OH: If the pump continues to overheat under normal conditions, the internal thermal sensor or drive may be failing and the motor/drive assembly should be serviced or replaced.
