Possible Causes
Pump not fully flooded with water, Air leak on suction side, Blocked skimmer or main drain, Incorrect priming speed or time settings
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power at the breaker before opening the pump lid.
- Fill the pump: Remove the pump lid and fill the strainer housing completely with water. Reinstall the lid, ensuring the Hayward lid O-ring is clean and lubricated.
- Open valves: Confirm all suction valves (skimmer, main drain) are fully open. Close any unused lines that may be drawing air.
- Check for suction leaks: Inspect unions, fittings, and the pump lid for air leaks. Tighten unions and replace worn O-rings or gaskets.
- Clean skimmer baskets: Empty all skimmer and pump baskets to ensure unobstructed flow.
- Adjust priming settings: On variable-speed models, increase the priming RPM and/or priming time in the menu so the pump has enough power and time to establish full prime.
- Re-test: Restore power and start the pump. If it still cannot prime, further investigation of suction plumbing for blockages or underground leaks may be required.
