Possible Causes
Worn ceramic/carbon seal faces, Dry-running pump, Chemical damage from high chlorine or low pH, Improper installation of seal
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power and close suction and return valves. Allow system to depressurize before disassembly.
- Disassemble pump: Remove the pump housing from the motor by loosening bolts or clamp. Remove the diffuser to access the impeller.
- Remove impeller: Hold the motor shaft at the rear with a wrench and unscrew the impeller from the shaft.
- Replace mechanical seal: Remove both halves of the old seal (ceramic seat in the seal plate and carbon/spring half on the impeller). Install a new Hayward-compatible mechanical seal, handling the polished faces carefully and keeping them clean.
- Reassemble: Reinstall impeller, diffuser, and housing. Replace any worn O-rings and gaskets. Open valves, restore power, and check for leaks.
