Possible Causes

Pump strainer not filled with water, Air leak at pump lid O-ring, Suction-side plumbing leak, Blocked skimmer or main drain line

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn off power before opening the pump lid. Never run the pump dry for extended periods.

  • Prime the pump: Remove the Hayward pump lid, fill the strainer housing completely with water, and reinstall the lid securely.
  • Inspect lid O-ring: Clean the O-ring and lid sealing surface. Apply a thin coat of pool-safe silicone lubricant and reinstall. Replace the O-ring if cracked or flattened.
  • Check water level: Ensure pool water is high enough to cover the skimmer opening at least halfway.
  • Open valves: Confirm all suction valves are fully open. Try isolating one suction line at a time to identify a blocked line.
  • Look for air leaks: With the pump running, observe the pump lid for air bubbles. Tighten unions and fittings on the suction side and repair any visible leaks.
