Possible Causes
Blocked ventilation openings, Pump running dry (no water), High ambient temperature and poor airflow, Failing motor with excessive internal friction
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect power before touching the motor housing; it may be very hot.
- Allow cooling: Let the pump cool for at least 30–60 minutes. Do not pour cold water on the motor housing.
- Check water flow: Ensure the pool water level is correct and that all valves are open. Verify that the pump is fully primed and not sucking air.
- Clean air vents: Inspect the motor housing for dust, leaves, or obstructions blocking the cooling vents. Clean with a soft brush and compressed air if available.
- Improve ventilation: Ensure the pump is not enclosed in a tight box or covered. Provide shade but allow free airflow around the motor.
- Monitor operation: After cooling and cleaning, run the pump and monitor for unusual noise or smell. If E96 recurs quickly, the motor may be failing internally and the pump motor assembly should be replaced.
