Possible Causes
Seized pump impeller, Failed motor start capacitor, Worn motor bearings, Debris jammed in Pahlén pump wet end
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Switch off the breaker and lock it out if possible. Do not repeatedly try to start a humming motor; this can overheat and damage it.
- Check for mechanical blockage: Remove the pump strainer lid and basket. Reach into the inlet (with power off) and feel for debris at the impeller eye. Do not use metal tools that could damage the impeller.
- Access the impeller: If debris is suspected, disconnect unions, remove the pump from the plumbing, and open the wet end (volute) according to Pahlén pump service instructions. Clear any stones, tiles, or plastic that may be jamming the impeller.
- Spin the shaft: At the motor fan end, try to rotate the shaft by hand. It should turn smoothly. If it is stiff or seized, bearings or the motor itself may be failing.
- Inspect the start capacitor: Locate the motor capacitor cover on the Pahlén pump motor. With power disconnected and capacitor discharged, inspect for bulging, leaking, or burnt smell. Replace with an identical µF and voltage rating if defective.
- Reset and test: Reassemble the pump, ensure it is primed with water, restore power, and clear the E02 error via the control panel. Observe startup; if E02 returns, stop and seek professional service.
