Possible Causes

Impeller jammed by debris, Seized motor bearings, Foreign object in volute, Shorted motor windings

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Turn off power at the breaker and verify the pump cannot start unexpectedly.

  • Check for mechanical blockage: Remove the pump lid on the Sta‑Rite IntelliPro or Max‑E‑Pro VS. Take out the strainer basket and inspect for rocks, toys, or large debris. Reach into the suction side and feel for obstructions (do not use sharp tools that can damage the housing).
  • Spin the motor shaft: At the back of the motor, remove the small cap (if present) to access the shaft. Try to rotate it by hand or with a screwdriver on the shaft end. It should turn smoothly. If it is very stiff or frozen, the bearings or impeller are seized.
  • Inspect impeller: If the shaft is hard to turn, remove the motor from the pump housing (volute) per the Sta‑Rite service manual. Unscrew the impeller and check for debris wrapped around it or damage to the diffuser.
  • Clean and reassemble: Remove all debris, flush the volute, and reassemble the pump. Ensure the diffuser o‑ring and housing o‑ring are seated correctly.
  • Test run: Restore power and start the pump. If E04 persists with a freely spinning shaft, the motor windings may be shorted and the motor assembly should be replaced.
