Possible Causes

Moisture inside motor or drive, Damaged motor insulation, Nicked power cable causing leakage to ground, Incorrect bonding or grounding of pump

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Danger: Ground faults can be life‑threatening. If you suspect a ground fault, do not continue to reset and run the pump. Use a GFCI‑protected circuit as required by code.

  • Visual inspection: Turn off power. Inspect the motor housing, conduit entries, and drive enclosure for cracks, water intrusion, or rust. Correct any obvious water leaks or enclosure damage.
  • Check bonding and grounding: Verify the green ground wire is securely attached to the pump ground lug and to the panel ground bar. Ensure the external bonding lug on the Sta‑Rite pump is connected to the pool bonding grid with the proper copper conductor.
  • Inspect power cable: Look for cuts, crushed sections, or melted insulation on the cable feeding the pump. Replace damaged cable.
  • Insulation testing (advanced): With the pump disconnected, a technician can perform a megohm test between each motor lead and ground. Low resistance indicates insulation breakdown and the motor should be replaced.
  • Do not bypass GFCI: Never bypass a tripping GFCI or ground fault protection. If E08 persists after drying and inspection, replace the motor or drive as recommended by Pentair Sta‑Rite.
