Possible Causes

Pump losing prime, Air leak on suction side, Blocked skimmer or main drain, Very low water level in pool

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Turn off power before opening the pump lid or valves.

  • Check water level: Ensure the pool water level is at least halfway up the skimmer opening. Low water allows air to be drawn into the system.
  • Inspect skimmer and pump basket: Remove debris baskets and clean out leaves, toys, and other obstructions. Reinstall baskets correctly.
  • Prime the pump: Remove the Sta‑Rite pump lid, fill the strainer housing completely with water using a hose, lubricate the lid o‑ring with silicone pool lube, and reinstall the lid tightly.
  • Check for suction leaks: With the pump running, look for air bubbles in the pump lid and at the returns. Tighten unions on the suction side, and inspect the pump lid o‑ring and drain plugs for cracks or missing gaskets.
  • Valve positions: Ensure suction and return valves are open enough to maintain flow. Avoid running at very high speeds with partially closed valves.
  • Reset: After restoring proper prime and flow, clear the error by stopping and restarting the pump.
