Possible Causes
Normal wear of shaft seal, Running pump dry or overheated, Chemical imbalance (high chlorine or low pH), Misalignment or improper installation of seal
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power and close isolation valves. Do not run the pump with an active leak at the seal; it can damage the motor.
- 1. Confirm leak location: Observe water dripping from the area where the motor meets the pump housing (seal plate). If the leak originates here, the shaft seal is likely failed.
- 2. Remove motor from pump: Remove the clamp band or housing bolts and pull the motor/impeller assembly away from the pump housing.
- 3. Replace shaft seal: Disassemble the impeller from the motor shaft. Remove the old shaft seal components from the impeller and seal plate. Install a new Pentair SuperFlo shaft seal kit, taking care not to touch the seal faces with bare fingers.
- 4. Inspect seal plate and housing: Check for cracks or warping. Replace damaged components.
- 5. Reassemble and test: Reinstall the impeller, diffuser, and motor assembly. Prime the pump and restore power. Verify that the leak has stopped.
