Possible Causes
Cracked pump lid, Flattened or dirty lid O-ring, Loose suction-side unions, Air leak at suction valves or fittings
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power before opening the pump or adjusting plumbing.
- 1. Inspect pump lid and O-ring: Remove the lid, clean the sealing surfaces, and inspect the O-ring for cracks or flattening. Replace if damaged and lubricate lightly with silicone-based lubricant.
- 2. Tighten unions and fittings: Check suction-side unions at the pump and any nearby fittings. Hand-tighten firmly; do not overtighten with tools as this can crack fittings.
- 3. Check for visible leaks: With the pump running, look for small air bubbles under the lid and at the returns. Use a soapy water solution on suspected joints; bubbles being drawn in indicate a leak.
- 4. Inspect suction valves: Ensure valve stems and seals are intact. Replace worn valve O-rings or the valve if it is drawing air.
- 5. Verify water level: Make sure the pool water level is at least halfway up the skimmer opening so the skimmer does not suck air.
