Possible Causes

Overcurrent condition in motor, Overheating of drive or motor, Internal drive fault, Blocked or seized impeller causing overload

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Shut off power at the breaker before opening any covers or touching the motor.

  • Step 1 – Reset the alarm: Press the Start/Stop or Reset button (model dependent). If the alarm clears and the pump runs normally, monitor for recurrence.
  • Step 2 – Check for mechanical binding: With power OFF, remove the pump lid and basket. Reach into the wet end (do not use sharp tools) and gently rotate the impeller via the motor shaft (from the rear fan or shaft). It should turn smoothly. If it is jammed with debris, clear the obstruction.
  • Step 3 – Inspect for overheating: Feel the motor housing after a shutdown (carefully). Excessive heat may indicate blocked ventilation, high ambient temperature, or overloading. Ensure the motor vents are clear of leaves and debris and that the pump is not running with closed valves.
  • Step 4 – Verify current draw: A technician can use a clamp meter to check that the pump’s running current matches the nameplate at the programmed speed. Overcurrent suggests mechanical drag or internal motor/drive issues.
  • Step 5 – Reduce speed and test: Program a lower RPM and attempt to run the pump. If it runs at low speed but alarms at higher speeds, suspect a partially seized motor, failing bearings, or a failing drive.
  • Step 6 – Replace drive/motor assembly if needed: Persistent ALARM with normal mechanical rotation and correct wiring usually indicates a failing drive or motor assembly.

Professional help: Overcurrent and drive faults often require specialized tools and replacement of the drive/motor assembly. Engage a Pentair service center if alarms persist.
