Possible Causes
Shorted motor windings, Internal short in drive IGBT/output transistors, Severe mechanical binding in pump, Incorrect wiring or ground fault
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect power at the breaker and verify it is off.
- Step 1 – Check for mechanical binding: Remove the pump lid and basket, then attempt to rotate the motor shaft by hand from the rear. If it is difficult or locked, disassemble the wet end to inspect the impeller and diffuser for obstructions or damage.
- Step 2 – Insulation test (technician): A professional can perform a megohm test on the motor windings to check for shorts to ground. Low insulation resistance indicates a failing motor.
- Step 3 – Inspect wiring: Confirm that the motor leads are correctly connected and that there are no pinched or damaged wires between the drive and motor.
- Step 4 – Replace motor/drive assembly: If mechanical parts are free and wiring is correct, a persistent Drive Over Current fault usually indicates a failed drive or motor. Replace the complete motor and drive assembly per Pentair guidelines.
Warning: Do not bypass safety features or attempt to run the pump with suspected electrical shorts.
