Possible Causes
Blocked airflow around drive heat sink, High ambient temperature, Internal fan failure (on some models), Degraded thermal interface inside drive
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Allow the drive to cool before handling.
- Step 1 – Clear obstructions: Remove any debris, leaves, or cobwebs from around the drive housing and cooling fins. Ensure adequate clearance per Pentair’s installation manual.
- Step 2 – Check mounting: Verify that the pump is mounted level and that the drive heat sink is not buried in mulch or against a wall that blocks airflow.
- Step 3 – Reduce load: Lower the maximum RPM in the schedule and see if the fault frequency decreases. High continuous loads in hot weather can overheat the drive.
- Step 4 – Inspect for internal damage: If Drive Over Temp occurs quickly even in cool conditions with low RPM, the internal temperature sensor or thermal path may be compromised. The drive assembly will likely need replacement.
Tip: Avoid enclosing the pump in a tight box or shed without ventilation; drives are designed to be in open air.
