Possible Causes
Seized or obstructed impeller, Failing motor windings, Shorted drive output stage, Incorrect supply voltage or wiring causing high current
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power at the breaker and lock it out if possible.
- Step 1 – Inspect for blockage: Remove pump lid and basket. Check for rocks, leaves, or plastic stuck in the impeller. If necessary, remove the pump housing bolts and separate the wet end to access and clean the impeller.
- Step 2 – Check motor rotation: With the wet end removed or basket out, rotate the motor shaft by hand from the rear. It should spin freely with only slight magnetic resistance. If stiff or grinding, bearings may be failing.
- Step 3 – Verify wiring and voltage: Confirm that the pump is wired for the correct voltage (typically 230 V only for IntelliFlo). Incorrect wiring or low voltage can cause high current draw. Have a qualified electrician measure voltage under load.
- Step 4 – Reduce load test: Temporarily run the pump at a lower RPM (e.g., 1500–2000) and observe if Over Current still appears. If it only occurs at higher speeds, suspect mechanical drag or marginal motor/drive.
- Step 5 – Replace failing components: If the impeller and wet end are clear and the shaft is hard to turn or noisy, replace the motor/drive assembly. If the motor spins freely but Over Current persists, the drive electronics are likely failing and should be replaced.
Note: Do not repeatedly reset and run the pump under Over Current conditions; this can permanently damage the drive and motor.
