Possible Causes
High ambient temperature around pump, Blocked motor cooling vents, Pump running at high RPM in direct sun with poor airflow, Internal drive temperature sensor fault
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Allow the pump to cool before touching the motor housing.
- Step 1 – Improve ventilation: Ensure there is at least the clearance recommended by Pentair around the motor and drive. Remove leaves, dirt, or obstructions from cooling fins and vents.
- Step 2 – Provide shade: If the pump is in direct sunlight in a hot climate, consider adding a ventilated shade or relocating the equipment to reduce radiant heat.
- Step 3 – Reduce RPM schedule: Reprogram the pump to run at lower speeds for longer durations instead of high‑speed short runs, which generate more heat.
- Step 4 – Check for internal drag: A partially seized bearing or misaligned wet end can cause extra heat. With power OFF, spin the shaft by hand; if rough or noisy, the motor bearings may be failing.
- Step 5 – Inspect drive for damage: If Over Temp occurs quickly even in cool conditions, the internal temperature sensor or drive may be faulty and require replacement.
Tip: Keep the equipment pad clean and free of mulch or landscaping that can block airflow.
