Possible Causes

Air leak on suction side plumbing, Low water level in pool or spa, Clogged pump basket or skimmer basket, Suction valve closed or partially closed

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn off power before opening the pump lid.

  • Step 1 – Check water level: Ensure the pool water level is at least halfway up the skimmer opening so the skimmer does not draw air.
  • Step 2 – Clean baskets: Remove and clean the pump strainer basket and all skimmer baskets. Debris can restrict flow and prevent priming.
  • Step 3 – Inspect pump lid O‑ring: Remove the lid, clean the O‑ring and sealing surfaces, and apply a thin coat of silicone‑based pool lube. Replace a cracked or flattened O‑ring.
  • Step 4 – Check suction valves: Verify that all necessary suction valves (skimmer, main drain, vacuum line) are open enough to allow full flow.
  • Step 5 – Manually prime: Fill the pump strainer housing completely with water, reinstall the lid securely, then restore power and start the pump. Observe for a solid stream of water in the pump basket within a few minutes.
  • Step 6 – Inspect for suction leaks: If large air bubbles persist in the pump lid, check suction unions, fittings, and the pump drain plugs for air leaks. Tighten unions and use Teflon tape on drain plugs if needed.
  • Step 7 – Adjust priming settings: In the pump menu, increase the priming speed and/or priming time per Pentair’s instructions to help establish prime.

Note: Do not let the pump run dry for extended periods; this can damage the mechanical seal and impeller.
