Possible Causes
Worn motor bearings, Water intrusion past mechanical seal, Misalignment or bent shaft, Debris contacting impeller
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power and do not run the pump for extended periods while it is making grinding noises; further damage can occur.
- Isolate noise source: Remove the pump lid and basket, then briefly run the pump (if safe) to determine if noise is from the motor or wet end.
- Check for debris: Inspect the impeller and diffuser for foreign objects that could rub and cause noise.
- Inspect for leaks: Look for water dripping between the pump housing and motor face. A failed mechanical seal can allow water into the motor bearings.
- Replace motor and seal kit: In most cases, noisy bearings require replacing the motor and installing a new Raypak mechanical seal and gasket kit.
