Possible Causes
Seized pump impeller or debris in volute, Failing motor start capacitor, Shorted motor windings, Binding mechanical seal or bearings in Rheem pump motor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Shut OFF the breaker and lock it out if possible. Do not repeatedly try to start a humming motor; it can overheat and fail.
- Check for mechanical blockage: Close suction and return valves. Remove the pump lid and basket. Reach into the volute (if accessible) and try to spin the impeller shaft by hand or with a screwdriver at the motor end. If it is jammed, remove debris and reassemble.
- Inspect the impeller: Separate the motor from the wet end following the Rheem service manual. Check the impeller for stones, leaves, or melted plastic. Clean or replace the impeller if damaged.
- Test the start capacitor: Locate the motor capacitor cover on the Rheem pump motor. Discharge the capacitor safely, then test with a capacitance meter. Replace the capacitor if it is out of spec or bulged/leaking.
- Check motor rotation by hand: With the pump disassembled, spin the motor shaft. If it feels rough or seized, the bearings or motor are failing and the motor assembly should be replaced.
- Reset and test: Reassemble, restore water flow (open valves), prime the pump, then restore power and test. If E02 returns immediately with a free‑spinning motor and good capacitor, the motor windings or control module are likely defective.
