Possible Causes
Blocked skimmer or pump basket, Air leak on suction side (pump lid O‑ring, unions), Low pool water level drawing air, Clogged Rheem pump strainer or suction line
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Turn OFF power before opening the pump lid or any valves.
- Clean baskets: Remove and clean the skimmer basket(s) and the Rheem pump strainer basket. Ensure no debris is lodged in the suction port.
- Check water level: Make sure pool water level is at least halfway up the skimmer opening so the skimmer does not suck air.
- Inspect pump lid and O‑ring: Remove the lid, clean the sealing surfaces, and inspect the O‑ring for cracks or flattening. Lubricate with pool‑safe silicone lube and reinstall. Replace the O‑ring if damaged.
- Check suction fittings: Tighten suction‑side unions and fittings on the Rheem pump. Look for bubbles in the pump basket when running; persistent bubbles indicate an air leak that must be sealed.
- Prime the pump: Fill the pump strainer housing with water, reinstall the lid, open all valves, then restart. If E09 persists with good prime and no visible air, the flow sensor or control may be faulty.
