Possible Causes

Bad start capacitor on Rheem motor, Stuck or seized motor bearings, Impeller jammed with debris, Low supply voltage causing insufficient starting torque

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety First: Turn OFF and lock out power. Do not repeatedly try to start a humming motor.

  • Check for free rotation: Remove the pump lid and basket. Try to spin the motor shaft from the rear or via the impeller (with pump disassembled). If it is stuck, clear debris or replace the motor.
  • Inspect and test capacitor: Remove the capacitor cover on the Rheem motor, discharge the capacitor, and test with a capacitance meter. Replace if bulged, leaking, or out of spec.
  • Verify voltage: Measure line voltage at the motor terminals while attempting a start. If voltage sags significantly, correct wiring or supply issues.
  • Replace motor if needed: If bearings are noisy or shaft remains stiff after clearing obstructions, replace the Rheem motor assembly.
