Possible Causes
Blocked motor ventilation, High ambient temperature in pump room, Failing motor bearings causing excess heat, Internal cooling fan failure (on TEFC motors)
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn off power and allow the motor to cool before touching it.
- Check ventilation: Ensure the Sta-Rite pump motor has at least several inches of clearance on all sides. Remove leaves, dirt, or debris blocking the cooling fins or fan shroud.
- Inspect for direct sun/heat: If the pump is in direct sun or a poorly ventilated equipment room, add shading or ventilation to reduce ambient temperature.
- Listen for bearing noise: Once cooled, briefly run the pump and listen for grinding or squealing. Overheated, noisy bearings can trigger thermal protection; the motor may need replacement.
- Clean air passages: With power off, use compressed air or a soft brush to clean dust from the motor cooling fins and fan cover.
- Duty cycle: Verify the pump is not being run at maximum speed continuously in extreme heat. Program lower speeds where possible.
- Reset: After cooling and cleaning, restore power and clear the error. Persistent E04 indicates internal motor or drive failure and warrants professional service.
