Possible Causes

Failed internal motor sensor, Damaged sensor wiring between motor and drive, Faulty control board speed feedback circuit

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Disconnect power before accessing motor or control wiring.

  • Inspect sensor harness: On integrated Sta-Rite variable-speed motors, locate the low-voltage harness between the motor and control. Check for cuts, pinched sections, or corroded connectors. Reseat or replace as needed.
  • Check for water ingress: Look for moisture inside the motor terminal area or control housing that could affect sensor signals. Dry thoroughly and improve sealing.
  • Test operation at different speeds: After reseating connectors, restore power and command several speeds. If the pump cannot change speed or throws E09, the internal sensor or drive is likely defective.
  • Replace motor or drive: On many Sta-Rite VS pumps, the speed sensor is integral to the motor; replacement of the motor assembly or complete drive/motor kit is required.
