Possible Causes

Worn ceramic/carbon seal faces, Running pump dry or overheated, Incorrect installation of seal during prior repair

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Turn off power and close suction and return valves before disassembling the pump.

  • Disassemble wet end: Remove Sta-Rite pump housing bolts and separate the volute from the seal plate. Remove the impeller by holding the motor shaft and unscrewing the impeller.
  • Remove old seal: Carefully remove both halves of the mechanical seal: the rotating carbon ring on the impeller and the stationary ceramic seat in the seal plate. Do not scratch the seal surfaces.
  • Install new Sta-Rite seal: Press the new ceramic seat into the seal plate using a clean cloth and even pressure. Slide the new rotating half onto the impeller shaft, avoiding touching the polished faces with bare fingers.
  • Reassemble pump: Reinstall the impeller, seal plate, and volute. Tighten bolts evenly. Reopen valves, prime the pump, and check for leaks.
  • Prevent recurrence: Avoid running the pump dry and ensure proper priming to extend seal life.
