Possible Causes

Clogged skimmer or pump basket, Air leak at Sta-Rite pump lid O-ring, Partially blocked suction line, Loose suction-side union

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Turn off the pump before opening any part of the system.

  • Clean baskets: Remove and clean the skimmer basket(s) and the Sta-Rite pump strainer basket. Ensure the pump basket is not cracked and seats properly.
  • Inspect pump lid O-ring: Remove the lid, clean the sealing surfaces, and inspect the O-ring for flat spots, cracks, or stretching. Lubricate with silicone pool lube and reinstall. Replace if damaged.
  • Check suction valves: Verify all necessary suction valves (skimmer, main drain, vacuum line) are open and not partially closed.
  • Look for air bubbles: With the pump running, observe the pump lid and pool returns. Persistent air bubbles indicate a suction-side air leak. Tighten unions, replace Teflon tape on threaded fittings, and repair any visible cracks in suction plumbing.
  • Prime the pump: If the pump has lost prime, fill the strainer housing with water and restart, watching for a solid, air-free flow.
