Possible Causes

Blocked motor ventilation, Pump running dry (no water), High ambient temperature and poor airflow, Failing motor windings

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety First: Unplug the pump before touching the motor housing. Allow the unit to cool for at least 20–30 minutes.

  • Check for dry running: Confirm that the pump housing is full of water and that both inlet and outlet hoses are submerged and free of air leaks. Never run the pump without water.
  • Clear ventilation openings: Inspect the motor casing and base for dust, leaves, or obstructions blocking the cooling vents. Use a soft brush or compressed air to clean them.
  • Improve airflow: Ensure the pump is on a firm, level surface with at least several inches of clearance around it. Do not cover the pump with tarps or boxes while running.
  • Check duty cycle: If the pump is a smaller Summer Waves cartridge pump, avoid running it 24/7 in extreme heat. Use shorter run cycles with cool-down periods.
  • Test restart: After cooling and cleaning, plug the pump back in and restart. If E2 reappears quickly, the motor’s internal thermal protector or windings may be failing and the motor assembly should be replaced.
