Possible Causes

Impeller jammed by debris, Seized motor bearings, Incorrect supply voltage or extension cord issues, Internal short in motor windings

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety First: Unplug the pump before disassembly. Do not repeatedly reset a tripping motor; this can cause permanent damage.

  • Inspect for debris: Remove the pump strainer cover and basket (if equipped). Shine a flashlight into the impeller area. Use a plastic tool or long zip tie to gently dislodge leaves, stones, or toys from the impeller.
  • Check impeller rotation: With the pump unplugged, try to spin the impeller by hand or with a non-metallic tool. It should turn smoothly with slight resistance. If it is locked or very stiff, the bearings may be seized.
  • Verify power source: Plug the pump directly into a properly grounded outlet. Avoid long, undersized extension cords that can cause voltage drop and high current draw.
  • Reassemble and test: Reinstall the basket and cover, ensuring the O-ring is seated. Prime the pump with water and restart. If E3 persists, the motor windings or internal overload device are likely damaged and the motor assembly should be replaced.
