Possible Causes
Worn or cracked ceramic/carbon seal faces, Improper installation of shaft seal during previous repair, Running pump dry causing seal overheating, Chemical damage from aggressive water chemistry
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power and close isolation valves. Relieve system pressure before disassembly.
- Confirm leak source: Dry the area and observe while briefly running the pump. Leaks at the joint between motor and pump seal plate indicate shaft seal failure.
- Disassemble pump: Remove the motor from the pump housing by loosening the bolts or clamp. Remove the impeller to access the shaft seal.
- Remove old seal: Carefully pry out the rotating seal half from the impeller and press out the stationary ceramic seat from the seal plate. Avoid scratching the seal surfaces.
- Install new seal: Install a new mechanical shaft seal compatible with your U.S. Motors pump wet end. Press the ceramic seat squarely into the seal plate using a clean cloth. Install the rotating half on the impeller shaft, handling only the rubber parts.
- Reassemble and test: Reinstall the impeller and motor, replace any housing O-rings, prime the pump, and check for leaks.
