U.S. Motors
Discharge Restriction / Dirty Filter
U.S. Motors pool pump runs but has low flow; filter pressure is higher than normal.

Possible Causes
Clogged sand, cartridge, or DE filter, Partially closed return valve, Blocked return fittings, Undersized plumbing causing excessive head at higher speeds
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power and relieve filter pressure before servicing.
- Check filter pressure: Compare current pressure to the clean starting pressure. A rise of 8–10 psi indicates the filter needs cleaning.
- Backwash or clean filter: For sand/DE filters, backwash per manufacturer instructions. For cartridge filters, remove and hose off or chemically clean cartridges.
- Inspect return valves: Ensure all return-side valves are fully open.
- Check return fittings: Inspect eyeball fittings for obstructions like leaves or toys. Clear any blockages.
- Adjust pump speed: On U.S. Motors variable-speed pumps, avoid running at unnecessarily high RPM that may exceed the system's hydraulic capacity.
