Possible Causes

Moisture in motor windings or junction box, Damaged insulation on power leads, Water intrusion into control enclosure, Failing motor with leakage to ground

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Do not repeatedly reset a tripping GFCI without finding the cause. Turn off power and verify the circuit is de-energized.

  • Inspect for moisture: Remove the motor terminal cover and control cover. Look for water, condensation, or corrosion. Dry thoroughly and correct any sources of leaks.
  • Check wiring: Inspect power leads for nicks, crushed insulation, or contact with sharp metal edges. Repair or replace damaged conductors.
  • Insulation test: With all leads disconnected, perform a megohm test between each motor lead and ground. Low resistance indicates a ground fault in the motor.
  • Test without external devices: Disconnect any heaters, lights, or other loads sharing the circuit to confirm the pump is the source.
  • Replace motor or control: If the motor fails insulation tests, replace the U.S. Motors motor. If only the control enclosure shows moisture damage, the control board may need replacement.
