Possible Causes
Blocked motor ventilation openings, Pump running dry with no water flow, High ambient temperature and poor airflow, Failing motor cooling fan
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn off power and allow the motor to cool before touching it.
- Check for dry‑run: Verify the pump strainer pot is full of water and that the pump is properly primed. If the pump is sucking air, check the suction line, skimmer water level, and lid o‑ring.
- Inspect ventilation: Clear leaves, dirt, and cobwebs from the motor cooling vents on the Waterway motor housing. Ensure there is at least several inches of clearance around the motor for airflow.
- Check cooling fan: With power off, look through the rear motor vents and gently spin the internal fan (if accessible). It should move freely. A broken or seized fan will cause overheating.
- Run at lower speed: On variable‑speed models, program a lower RPM and longer run time to reduce motor heat load, especially in hot climates.
- Restart: After cooling and cleaning, restore power and clear the error. If E04 recurs quickly, the internal thermal sensor or windings may be failing and the motor should be replaced.
